Characteristic Living Organism
With Courage and Common Sense by Susan Wittig Albert, "Much of the time our society stereotypes and dismisses old women as ridiculous, troublesome, irrelevant, and (worst of all) boring. These memoirs contradict the assumptions. The women who wrote them have experienced solid, hearty lives, with a characteristic vitality enduring into old age."--from the Foreword by Liz CarpenterWomen who were sixty or older at the turn of the twenty-first century have lived through some of recent history's most momentous moments--and yet these women often believe that their personal lives and stories are insignificant, not worthy of being recorded for future generations. To change that perception and capture some of these life stories before they are lost, the Story Circle Network, a national organization dedicated to helping women write about their lives, developed the Older Women's Legacy (OWL) Circle Memoir Workshops. During the first two years of the project (1998-2000), nearly 500 older women participated in workshops that offered them the opportunity and encouragement to reflect on and create written records of their lives. With Courage and Common Sense presents an extensive selection of memoirs from the OWL Circle project. Organized thematically, they describe women's experiences of identity, place, work, family life, love and marriage, loss and healing, adventures great and small, major historical events, and legacies to keep and pass along. Taken as a whole, the memoirs chronicle far-reaching changes in the ways that women participated in the world during the twentieth century. They show how women learned to surmount obstacles, to courageously make the most of the opportunities that came their way, and to move quietly and wisely beyond the limitsthat were imposed upon them.
Leadership That Matters: The Critical Factors for Making a Difference in People's Lives and Organizations' Success by Marshall Sashkin, Leadership That Matters promotes leadership that not only improves productivity and performance but also makes a positive difference in the lives of organization members. Transformational leadership is based on three personal characteristics, as well as on the organizations culture. Using this new model of leadership that transforms individuals from subordinate followers into self-directed leaders, the authors discuss how to develop the required characteristics and construct an appropriate culture to bring about desired changes.
Living fossil - Living fossil is a term for any living species (or clade) of organism which closely resembles species otherwise only known from fossils and has no close living relatives. These species have all survived major extinction events, and generally retain low taxonomic diversities. Symbiote (comics) - In the Marvel Comics universe, A symbiote is a living alien organism that bonds with another living organism (usually a human) in order to survive. Since it has no classifying name it is refered to as a "symbiote" because of it's symbiotic relationships, or often as a "Living Costume" in reference to the way the amorphous creature envelopes it's host. In vivo - In vivo (Latin for (with)in the living). In vivo is used to indicate the presence of a whole/living organism, in distinction to a partial or dead organism, or a computer model. Last universal ancestor - Last universal ancestor (LUA), the hypothetical latest living organism from which all currently living organisms descend. As such, it is the most recent common ancestor of the set of all currently living organisms.
