Function Living Organism
Life at the Limits: Organisms in Extreme Environments by David A. Wharton, Frogs that freeze solid, worms that dry out, and bacteria that survive temperatures over 100° C are all organisms that have an extreme biology, which involves many aspects of their physiology, ecology, and evolution. These organisms live in seemingly impossible places and exhibit fascinating behavior. In this captivating account, the reader is taken on a tour of extreme environments, and shown the remarkable abilities of organisms to survive a range of extreme conditions, such as high and low temperatures and desiccation. Examples include: Hydrothermal vents Hot and cold deserts Polar regions hot springs alpine and winter temperate environments ocean depths, salt lakes, soda lakes, and estuarine muds, among other environments. Life at the Limits considers how organisms survive major stresses, and what extreme organisms can tell us about the origin of life and the possibilities of extraterrestrial life. David Wharton is a Senior Lecturer in Zoology at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He has focused his research on the survival abilities of nematodes, resulting in the publication of over 75 research papers and one book, The Functional Biology of Nematodes (Croom Helm, 1986). His contribution to research was recognized by the award of the degree Doctor of Science by the University of Bristol in 1997. Recently, Wharton has become interested in the popularization of science through his involvement in the establishment of a Postgraduate Diploma in Natural History, Filmmaking and Communication, a collaboration between the University of Otago and Natural History New Zealand, a producer of natural history films based in Dunedin.
The Zen of Organizing: Creating Order and Peace in Your Home, Career, and Life by Regina Leeds, Create order in your life -- get organized! -- This book provides a new twist on a familiar topic-creating order for spiritual fulfillment. -- This book holds "organizing" to a higher standard, arguing that how a room looks, or even how it functions, aren't enough; that how a room feels -- how it nurtures and supports your soul-is what's most important. -- People on the spiritual path can indeed read ANY organizing book to get the "how to's" down, but this book is the only one based on spiritual principles, making it a perfect fit for their quest. The Zen of Organizing will take readers through Regina's miraculous 3-step process guaranteed to bring peace and calm to even the most cluttered and chaotic environments. Beginning with an understanding of the concept of time and how to manage it effectively, Regina moves readers through each room in their home to help create an environment that nurtures and uplifts them. Readers will learn how to: set up an office, organize their kitchen, clutter-free their closet, and to overcome physical and emotional ties to chaos. And for those intrigued by the idea of turning their living and working environments into Sacred spaces, Regina offers an introduction to the ancient art of Feng Shui.
Living fossil - Living fossil is a term for any living species (or clade) of organism which closely resembles species otherwise only known from fossils and has no close living relatives. These species have all survived major extinction events, and generally retain low taxonomic diversities. Living systems theory - Living systems theory is an offshoot of Bertalanffy's general systems theory, created by James Grier Miller, intended to formalize the concept of "life". According to Miller's original conception, as spelt out in his magnum opus Living Systems, a "living system" must contain each of 19 "critical subsystems", which are defined by function ("boundary", "transporter", "decider", etc). Organism - In biology and ecology, an organism (in Greek organon = instrument) is a complex adaptive system of organs that influence each other in such a way that they function as a more or less stable whole and have properties of life. Symbiote (comics) - In the Marvel Comics universe, A symbiote is a living alien organism that bonds with another living organism (usually a human) in order to survive. Since it has no classifying name it is refered to as a "symbiote" because of it's symbiotic relationships, or often as a "Living Costume" in reference to the way the amorphous creature envelopes it's host.
